Therapy Sessions Resume May 13, 2009

The gardening (aka my spring, summer, and fall therapy sessions) has started slowly this year. First it was cold. Then it was 90 degrees. Then it rained for 3946 days straight. In the past week we’ve had a chance to get started outside. Gardening is the one thing that calms me and at the same time gets me excited. I also don’t really care if I mess something up–it’s easily fixed and I just try something different the next year. My sanity thanks gardening.

Here are some shots of our new front yard. On Easter Sunday, Matt and I pulled out our dying bushes and these beds are finally ready to be beautiful:

Our composter:

And the back–mostly we will grow veggies and herbs with some flowers thrown in here and there. The veggie garden is not finished, obviously. We have some seedlings ready to go: tomatoes, peppers, peas, and soy beans:

Seedlings–we have a lot:

My New Year starts tomorrow January 5, 2009

I wasn’t ready to let go of 2008 on January 1–not even this weekend–I was in denial. It seems fitting that since tomorrow is when I have to talk to Real Live People for the first time since 2008 (like, coworkers) that January 5th is the official start of my New Year. For the first time in my life, I’ve thought of some official resolutions:

I am going to cook more, and cook more healthy meals in 2009. I have a slow cooker and some new cook books and I am prepared to use them.

I will not watch trash TV five out of seven nights of the week. Matt and I canceled our cable and suspended our Netflix subscription. I think it’s true that people who watch less TV are happier. We have been focusing on DVDs and short clips online–Northern Exposure is still the greatest show of all time, and Weekend Update is the best part of SNL (thanks Hulu). And once a week I can gorge myself on Real Housewives clips or Top Chef reruns (thanks again, Hulu).

We are all going back to Japan. This has been Matt’s and my dream since we met: to return to Japan together. Timeline: I’ve been multiple times from 1985-2003; Matt lived there from 2001-2002; and we started dating in 2003. We’ve never been there together and we are finally getting the chance because my parents will live there for four months starting on Thursday! I will miss my parents and they are giving Matt and me a chance to return to our favorite city together.

I will not insist on cosmetic home improvements. We have some necessary work that needs to be done and that will come first. No more obsessing over the paint colors or landscaping, although these projects will hopefully be hobby-like distractions this year (I release all of my stress from March through September when I can weed, plant, and pick vegetables).

And finally, in 2009, I am going to sleep more. I never get enough sleep but I owe it to myself to get at least 7 hours a night on average.

That’s all I’ve come up with as far as “resolutions” go. I’m sure I’ll think of a lot more and maybe even convert my musings into a spreadsheet.

I wish you all a truly Happy Year, and leave you with a few photo highlights (because everyone knows that blogs with no photos are boring as hell).

I think it’s about time for a garden update! My mom came over yesterday to help me clean up some areas and she also taught me how to edge–thanks Mom! I could have gardened all day. We were gone for 4 days and everything just went out of control–especially the tomatoes! We need to tame them with some chicken wire and stakes this weekend. We also planted some plants that Matt’s grandmother gave us, and the bean seeds that Mike gave me a few weeks ago are starting to sprout.

The day lily bloomed today:

I’m always posting pictures of our gardening projects, and on Sunday I realized I wasn’t in any of them! I told Matt he had to take a picture of me gardening so that one day when I am old I can show my grandchildren. So, here’s me (and some of our Sunday projects).

The above photos are all taken by Matt. We now have a gnome (see previous post); a thriving grape vine, impatiens, marigolds, and lots of other flowers and plants I forget the names of. We also planted most of our seedlings into the raised beds.
